THE LOST SOUL

 

What Happens To The Lost Soul?
 

The Bible clearly teaches that the careless sinner, one who dies in sin without Christ, will be cast into hellfire.  Hell is an unpopular topic in our permissive and lawless age.  Nevertheless, the hatred and rejection of this Biblical doctrine does not negate its validity.  The reality of Hell is a Biblical fact.  Its certainty must not be questioned merely because many people doubt its existence.  The Bible is very plain in its declaration:  those who fail to repent and follow Jesus will be eternally lost.

 

Mark 16:16 …he that believeth not shall be damned.

 

2 Thes. 1:7-9  …the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power… 

 

Rev. 20:15  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

 

Judgment Comes After Death

Each of us must stand before God and give an account for our lives.  All our motives, thoughts, words, and actions will be brought under the holy and scrutinizing light of Almighty God and His Word.    Those who have not forsaken their sins and submitted to the Lord Jesus Christ will be cast into the Lake of Fire.

 

2 Cor. 5:10  For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

Hebrews 9:27  And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment…

Who Will Be Damned?

The Bible gives us an exhaustive and detailed list of those who are worthy of hellfire. For example:

 

1 Corinthians 6:9-10  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 

 

 Rev. 21:8   But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone:

which is the second death.

Moreover, we must acknowledge that all sin is worthy of the severest Divine retribution. It is sin that kills, and therefore, sin that damns…

 

Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death…

Furthermore, the Bible says, “…all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Rom. 3:23)  Hence, all men are sinners, and therefore, are destined for Hell.  Except men find deliverance from their sins through the atoning blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal consequences cannot be avoided.  This being so, the only remedy for sin is the perfect sacrifice of Christ, the holy Lamb of God.  His blood, and His blood alone, can cleanse and deliver sinners from sin.  Ultimately, it is those who reject Jesus Christ as Lord in preference to their sins who will be cast into the Lake of Fire (John 3:19).  In the final analysis, all who refuse the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ are forever, and irrevocably damned.

 

Psalm 9:17  The wicked shall be turned into hell...

How Many Will Be Lost?

It is not the will of God that any man go to Hell, this is why God the Father, sent His only begotten Son to die at Calvary to redeem us from sin (John 3:16; 2 Pet. 3:9).  Nonetheless, Jesus addressed this question with stunning clarity.  An honest interpretation of Jesus’ words leaves us with the clear indication that most, unfortunately, will reject the gospel and consequently perish.  

 

Matthew 7:13-14  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which

leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

 

What Is Hell Like?

The Bible is very specific in its description of Hell.  The inspired writers use graphic and vivid language in an attempt to enlighten us to the awful conditions in Hell.  The lost soul will literally suffer in a real, burning Lake of Fire. 

 

Matthew 25:41 …depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire

 

Matthew 13:42  And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Hell is forever.  There will be no escapes, no second chances, no pardons; only eternal agony without end.  The lost soul in Hellwill be conscious, fully aware of the pain, torment, and anguish of the punitive flames.  The man who dies without Christ is tormented forever, where there is no peace, rest, or comfort, and WITH NO END.

Matthew 25:46   And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

 

Rev. 14:11   And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night…

 

The Bible describes Hell as a dark and lonely place, where the lusts and sinful desires of the sinner will never fade. 

 

Mark 9:48   Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

 

Matthew 22:13  …bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness;

there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

 

Likewise, Hell will not erase the memories of this life.  Men will be grievously troubled with the recollections of squandered opportunities to follow Christ.  They will remember every time they heard the gospel.  They will recall every gospel tract offered to them and every time someone urged them to repent.  In fact, the memories of their specific rejections of Jesus Christ will haunt them for eternity. 

 

Proverbs 5:11-12   And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof…

 

Luke 16:27-28   Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

 

What Must I Do To Be Saved?

 

Proverbs 15:24  The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

As a sinner, sin has become your master (John 8:34).  Hence, you are not only under the penalty of sin you are likewise under its spellbinding power.  The problem with man is not merely one of behavior but one of nature.  Therefore, the Bible declares you must be utterly changed (John 3:3); yet it is impossible for you to deliver yourself (Jeremiah 13:23).  Sin has rendered you helpless, shattered, and lost.  You are not only in need of forgiveness but you are also in need of cleansing.  What will you do?  Is there any hope?  Is there anyone who can help?  The Bible alone offers you this good news:

 

Jesus Christ Is The Savior From All Sin!  

 

If you will be saved from the power and penalty of your sin, you must repent (turn from all sin to serve and follow Jesus) and put your complete faith in Jesus Christ, God's Son.  When Jesus died on the cross, He became your sin-offering, dying to free you from the bondage of sin.  He, once and for all, stepped into the courtroom of your judgment and completely paid the fine.  Then He rose from the dead, defeating death.  If you want to be saved from sin and hell, confess and forsake your sin (Proverbs 28:13) and put your faith in Jesus Christ for your eternal salvation.  When you make Jesus your Lord (Romans 10:9) you will pass from death to life.  Now, go and sin no more, read the Bible daily and obey what you read (see John 14:21).  God will never fail you.  -B.W.

fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
